DON'T Be Blinded By The Light

Being a photographer means more than simply "clicking a button" as many seem to think. There are many technical and not so technical things you must keep in mind.   ie: what the subject is, composition, whether you want the photo to be in color or black and white, etc. But most importantly, a photographer has to pay attention to the LIGHT! Without light, photography, as well as many other things would not be possible. After all, photography does mean light writing.

That being said, today I will begin a monthly series on light. (Yes, I am well aware that nearly every photographer out there with a blog has at some point blogged about light.) My goal here is not to inform you, per say, about light, but to encourage you to take notice of it. Before studying photography, I didn't pay a lick of attention to light other than whether it was on or off, blinding me while I drove, or creating a glare on the T.V. screen.  Now, I notice light everywhere.  I notice the form it takes, how harsh or soft it is, the effect it has on the object it is casting itself upon, the shadows it creates, and how simply beautiful it really is.  Many people don't think twice about something they can't exactly touch; I want to change that.

To kick off this series, I would like to share with you one of the most simple, common forms of light that all of us use, but don't think twice about... once the oven door closes!

The Story: A few months ago, a friend of mine (who happens to be OBSESSED with s'mores) and I decided to make these delicious s'mores brownies. Naturally, I had to capture every step of the making and baking process. While shooting, I noticed that the oven light put off the most beautiful soft light. In fact, I loved it so much I couldn't get enough of it!!

In this first photo you can really see how the light captures the shape and detail of each of the marshmallows.

The flare, the textures, the shadows...all made possible by the lighting in the oven. I love it!!

Now that I have you drooling....

Ta-da!! The end result.

I challenge you to take notice of the light that surrounds you every day and find a way to capture it's beauty. Life is too short not to appreciate these little things that have such a huge impact on our lives.

"I often think of that rare fulfilling joy, when I am in the presence of some wonderful alignment of events. Where the light, the colour, the shapes and the balance all interlock so beautifully that I feel truly overwhelmed by the wonder of it."
